Spirit of '76

7896049_400x400 My clearest memories of Independence Day growing up--aside from lighting snakes on the driveway--was around the US Bicentennial in 1976.  All the teachers in school were a-twitter about the significance ("200 years old!") and regaled us with tales of Paul Revere, Thomas Jefferson, and Ben Franklin.  The fireworks were an extra-big deal that year, and celebrities like Sandy Duncan , Captain & Tennille, and Evel Knievel all seemed to have specials celebrating it.  As a six year-old, it was AWESOME.

So when a group of comrades on a music bulletin board I periodically waste time on decided to split up the 70's and make mixes for each year of the decade, I volunteered for 1976.  I was a little worried at first, since '76 was when Zeppelin and the Stones started phoning it in and just before punk really took off, but I was able to pull together a respectable retrospective of the year.

To celebrate your 4th, and perhaps transport yourself back to a time when there wasn't all the hand-wringing about flag-pins and patriotism, I'm sharing the mix with you.  While you're at it, you should check out some of the great other mixes from the decade, like 1975 and 1978.

Here's the tracklist, and you can download it here.  You go enjoy now.

  1. Thin Lizzy - Jailbreak
  2. AC/DC - Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap
  3. Kiss - Shout it Out Loud
  4. Aerosmith - Sick as a Dog
  5. Boston - More Than a Feeling
  6. Styx - Lorelei
  7. Flamin' Groovies - Shake Some Action
  8. Electric Light Orchestra - Do Ya
  9. Rod Stewart - The Killing of Georgie (Part I and II)
  10. Peter Frampton - Lines on my Face
  11. The Modern Lovers - Pablo Picasso
  12. Bob Seger & the Silver Bullet Band - Night Moves
  13. Tom Waits - Tom Traubert's Blues
  14. Gordon Lightfoot - Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald
  15. Blue Oyster Cult - (Don't Fear) The Reaper
  16. Bob Dylan - Mozambique
  17. The Commodores  - Fancy Dancer
  18. Hot Chocolate - You Sexy Thing
  19. KC & The Sunshine Band - I'm Your Boogie Man
  20. Boz Scaggs - Lido Shuffle
  21. Stevie Wonder - Sir Duke

We're doing the 80's next so keep your eyes open for another mix once we kick that off.  I've already claimed 1982, and I've whittled the tracklist down to a cozy 41 songs.

2007 Year-End Mix Tape

Pirate1733273 It was a great, great, great year for music.  My ravenous appetite for new tunes was matched only by the spectacular generosity of those fine pirates individuals who shared their music online and allowed little ol' me to "try it out."  On top of it all, so much of said music was freakin' awesome that I find myself faced with making my annual year-end mix-tape without being able to fit it all on one "tape."  (Ha!  Remember those?)

I could go on about a few bands, like Spoon, LCD Soundsystem, Superfamily, Kings of Leon, The National, Panda Bear, Tegan & Sara, and Dinosaur Jr., but I'm far better at plagiarizing album reviews that writing them.  Besides, music is to be listened to, not read about.  It's not like our ancestors gathered around the fire after a big hunt and danced to somebody's description of how good the latest didjeridu album was, right?

So what's a fella to do?  Well, thumb my nose at the RIAA and pass along a little musical goodness to you in not one but TWO installments.  This year's mix tape, comprising many (although hardly all) of my favorite tunes from 2007 can be downloaded here (for part 1) and here (for part 2).

This certainly isn't an all-inclusive list of the best tunes of the year, but it's a nice sampling of some of my favorites.  Again, you can download part 1 here and part 2 here.  I hope you enjoy it!

Is there anything I missed?  Anyone want to suggest any gems that may have slipped through the cracks before I start looking forward to the new Cat Power and Sons & Daughters?

Upon Further Review

The writer's strike has left me in a bit of a lurch, as all of my original material has been outsourced to underpaid unionized labor for months now.  The networks may be able to throw together reality programming like "The Amazing Race: Dancing with the Singing Biggest Loser Survivor Edition...hosted by Howie Mandel" but I've got nothing on my mind grapes and only to the end of this Dora episode to think of something.

How about music?

I could talk about all the great music I've stolen acquired this year, but after my primary source was shut down last month (by freakin' Interpol, no less...totally James Bond!) I'm staying under the radar.  I could post my favorite music videos, but Chag had that idea a year ago, and I respect the man too much to steal that idea.

Time for some revisionist history.  Time to revisit the Top 100.

Ever since compiling the list last year, I've listened and relistened to nearly everything on it dozens of times.  Maybe I've changed, or maybe I've just had seconds thoughts, but some things just aren't sitting right with it.  If this is my one historical document that survives into posterity, I want to leave some record of my concerns so some day my children's children can assemble the director's cut.

Item #1 - The Top 10

I was so sure Some Girls was my second favorite Stones album, but now I'm not so sure.  I still love it, and it's on the list somewhere, but top 10?  No, that's too high.  Same with Irresistable Bliss; I love me my Soul Coughing/Mike Doughty, but it's too eccentric to hang with the big boys like Dylan, the Clash, and Bowie.  Both these albums must drop a few notches, leaving room for two worthy competitors, Making Movies and Rumours, to move up.

Item #2 - The Problem with Nostalgia

I surprised myself when I put Thriller at #78.  I never listen to that album!  I admire it and all, but a few random plays on iPod shuffle gave it a temporary boost which it hasn't maintained since.  I think the problem is with familiarity...just because you know every song doesn't mean it's really as important to you--or as great--as you remember.  So I need to pull that off the list completely.  In retrospect, the same can be said for Hysteria (#51), Is This It? (#41) and Hotel California (#73).  All these must drop...a lot.  I'll go out on a limb and say that Def Leppard and the Strokes stay on the list (barely) but the Eagles and Michael need to retire.

Two new open spots on the list...will there be more?

Item #3 - Alt-Country just ain't what it used to be

I used to comfortably rate alt-country music--particularly anything done by the progeny of Uncle Tupelo or Whiskeytown--as among the best music on the planet.  Whiskeytown's Stranger's Almanac and Ryan Adams' Heartbreaker very nearly made the list the first time.  But lately I've found it sorta....boring.  Maybe I'm just tired of it.  I can't summarily drop all the alt-country on the list; Tomorrow the Green Grass and Being There are ranked high for a reason.  But a re-examination is necessary, and I think #92 Summerteeth (which on further consideration really isn't better than Yankee Hotel Foxtrot after all) and #81 Trace probably need to drop.

And so two more spots open up...

Item #4 - What was once "fresh" now kinda bugs me

Three of the newer albums that made the list by New Pornographers (#68), Franz Ferdinand (#87) & the Donnas (#80) were all pretty solid choices at the time.  But like so many things that are new and shiny when you first buy them, they become dull and scratched over time.  I was worried about putting new stuff on the list for that very reason, but assumed these would stand the test of time for me.  Not so much.  I still like 'em...they just aren't top 100 material.  The most likely to stick to the list was Franz Ferdinand, but as I think about it I still consider them Strokes 2.0, and if the Strokes are falling...well let's just make it a clean sweep.  Three more down!

Item # 5 - I'm fucking sick of Bono

Enough already.  Go away, you smug bastard!  As punishment, War (#56) takes a dive.  Maybe someday I'll reconsider it, but until I get the endless repetition of "Vertigo" out of my head I don't think I can stomach it.

That leaves eight open spots!  Now, in a unique application of participatory democracy, I'm going to give everyone a chance to vote on what should be added to the list.  I've created a list of candidates and included links to download the albums ('cause I'm just that generous).  Some are familiar...some maybe not so much.  Most nearly missed the cut last time, but all are great for different reasons.  So have a listen and let the voting begin!

Ziggy

David Bowie - The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust & the Spiders from Mars

A companion piece to Hunky Dory (comfortably nestled in my top 10) and considered by many Bowie's best album.

Lcdsoundsystem

LCD Soundsystem - LCD Soundsystem

The new LCD Soundsystem is a strong contender for album of the year.  Much dance club goodness, and perhaps the best opening three notes of any album ever.

Sparks_kimonof

Sparks - Kimono My House

A bizarre masterpiece, part theatrical eccentricities and part pre-disco pop.  And what a great album cover!

Kleptones_24h_cover

Kleptones - 24 Hours

A delightful mishmash of beats, song excerpts, and pop-culture references, all set around a "day in the life" theme.  See if you can guess where the samples come from.

Eloout_of_the_blue_lp

Electric Light Orchestra - Out of the Blue

ELO.  The soundtrack of my childhood.  It probably had something to do with the logo, which looked like a cross between a flying saucer and Simon.  Still, such great tunes...

Iron_maiden

Iron Maiden - The Number of the Beast

Tight, menacing rock and roll, with the greatest, most-frightening mascot in the history of music.  The title song is on permanent rotation on my iPod during workouts.

Paul_mccartney_ram

Paul McCartney - Ram

With apologies to Imagine and All Things Must Pass, this is the best album by any former Beatle.  Most of his other solo stuff is trash (including everything Wings-related) but this is a shockingly good disk.  Check it out.

Outlandos

The Police - Outlandos d'Amour

I'm sure this will get some votes from the Boston crowd, with whom I shared a night in July at Fenway.

Spoon_girls_can_tell

Spoon - Girls Can Tell

Another band with an album out that's contending for album of the year.  In the span of a year I've gone from having barely heard of them to owning all their albums and listening to them all the time (currently tied for #6 on my Last.FM profile).  The hard part was picking one album to nominate for this, but I give this one a slight edge over Gimme Fiction.  Very, very slight.

Jamiroquai

Jamiroquai - Traveling Without Moving

A more lightweight selection than any of the other candidates, but I keep coming back to this albums effortless grooves.

Exile_guyville

Liz Phair - Exile in Guyville

Another album that very nearly made last year's list.  Still a raw, excellent listen, especially "The Divorce Song," which is the most heartbreaking song about the end of a relationship outside of Blood on the Tracks.

Wilco_yankee_hotel_foxtrot

Wilco - Yankee Hotel Foxtrot

As I mentioned earlier, a worthier nominee than Summerteeth in retrospect.  Having recently watched I Am Trying to Break Your Heart I have a new appreciation for it.  Less twangy than some of their other music, but powerfully atmospheric and thoughtful.

Dennis_wilson_2

Dennis Wilson - Pacific Ocean Blue

A lost masterpiece by the late Beach Boy.  A de facto choice on lazy summer afternoons, with beautiful harmonies which make you question whether his brother Brian was really the most talented member of the group.

Automatic

R.E.M. - Automatic for the People

The (almost) final nominee, and the finest recording of R.E.M. made after they crossed over from college radio to MTV.  I think this is some of the most beautiful music ever put to vinyl (or in this case converted to 1's and 0's and stored in my hard drive)

Tonic_troops

The Boomtown Rats - Tonic for the Troops

A late addition!  I almost left this gem off!  What was I thinking?  For those of you who only know Bob Geldof as the dude who shaved his eyebrows off in Pink Floyd's The Wall you're missing out on some of the best new wave punk ever recorded.

OK, those are the options.  I'll tally your votes and let you know the winners soon.  In the meantime, I'll go back and see if there's any other ideas I can recycle.  Top TV characters, anyone?

A Tribute to Open-Shirt Crazy-Dancin' Super-Fan

I see you baby.  Shakin' that ass.

Flail I obviously don't get out to concerts nearly as often as you do.  And I almost never pay for reunion tours.  But this one was a special case*.

You were soooo excited to be at Fenway, watching what must have been your favoritist band evah.  You probably took the adorable little toy train to the park, and may have taken some vitamins before you left.

You bounced in your seat like a Happy Fun Ball on speed.  Your dancing closely resembled a blend of aboriginal mating rituals and a two hour-long seizure.  And when you threw open your shirt so your chest-sweat sprayed your neighbors as you twirled, the stage lights reflected off your pale skin like a hairy disco-ball.

I've seen you before.  Maybe not you specifically, but a version of you.  Of all the characters I see at concerts, you are my favorite.  More than Motörhead T-Shirt Soundboard Guy.  More than Smuggled Lighter "Free Bird" Yeller.  Even more than Overweight Big Hair Air-Guitar Fist-Pumper.

I love you, Open-Shirt Crazy-Dancin' Super-Fan!  Thanks for projecting your enthusiasm (in wet little rivulets) into the crowd, and making an already awesome concert that much better with your antics.

You are the BIGGEST POLICE FAN EVAH!!  Rock on, Open-Shirt Crazy-Dancin' Super-Fan!

* There is one other special case.  So Robert, Jimmy, and John, if you're reading this I want you to know that money is no object.  I'll be in the front row, and Open-Shirt Crazy-Dancin' Super-Fan will be right there with me.

Shitty Mix-Tape Challenge 2007

It's that time of year again, when the lovely and talented Paige is challenging us all here on the Internets to devise the shittiest mix-tape imaginable.  Last year my boy Aaron won, while Sarah put up one hell of a fight.  I seriously underestimated the strength of my competition (and the universal hatred of Metal Machine Music) and was caught flat-footed, but this year I'm turning it up to eleven.

Brace yourselves...here it is:

Luca Turilli - "The Ancient Forest of Elves"

It's like the freakish spawn of Spinal Tap and the Dungeon Master's Guide

"R2-D2 We Wish You a Merry Christmas"

Did you know this is Jon Bon Jovi's first recording ever?  That's him on lead vocals.  I wonder why he doesn't play it in his Jersey shows...

Clint Black - "Iraq & Roll"

The title would be enough to make the list alone, but the misplaced machismo and patriot-pandering catapult it into the stars of shittiness.

Captain Lou Albano - "Captain Lou's History of Music/Captain Lou"

You know what's a good idea?  Making a whole album of music sung by professional wrestlers.  And yes, that's the former governor of Minnesota on the cover.

Wing - "Highway to Hell"

I ♥ Wing.  As long as she keeps covering AC/DC she'll have a place on this list.

As a special treat, here's what almost (but didn't) make the list.  Tank tops, hearts with wings, crotch-grabbing...what more could you want?

Septem Carmen

I've got to admit that the quality level of this blog has really dropped off over the last few months.  It doesn't take long to find a cornucopia of better, more entertaining writers among "parenting" blogs, and to be honest I often find myself just slapping something up here to maintain the facade of a functioning journal.  Coming up with interesting things to talk about on a regular basis can be a chore, and doing so without constantly referencing the same twelve movies is nearly impossible.

Let's face it...I'm boring!

Whenever I spend time with more talented bloggers, I'm inspired to work harder, to think creatively, to recommit to clever story-telling and witty asides.  I prioritize insipid and inane activities over developing my talents as a writer, and I know that with focus and determination I can regain the spark that led me to blogging in the first place, and make it both easier and more enjoyable for me to continue!

How do I propose to do this, you ask?  And when will it begin?

180pxjeriryanassevenI'll start with a music meme!

(Come on...did you seriously think I was going somewhere dramatic with that?  If so, you're obviously new to this site.  I ain't Dooce.)

My man Whit--who, inexplicably, pronounces the "h" in his name--tagged me with this meme (which I think started at Cynical Dad just a few days ago) and threw down the gauntlet:  what are seven songs you're listening to (and liking, presumably) right now.  Never one to shy away from a music challenge, I accepted.

So to kick off your week, here's Seven Super Songs to Sing in a Spirited State of Satisfaction, Supplied by my Spectacular Self.

Bishop Allen - Little Black Ache

His new-EP-every-month project was cool and all, but his first album is the one I keep listening to.

Neil Young - Cowgirl in the Sand (Live at Massey Hall)

Run, don't walk, and get this album.  Right now.  I'll wait...

LCD Soundsystem - North American Scum

I doubt I'll find an album I like better that Sound of Silver this year.

The Long Blondes - Once and Never Again

Girls with guitars.  There's not much better than that.

Apples in Stereo - Same Old Drag

They're baaaaack

U2 - The Three Sunrises

I'm so freakin' sick of U2 that I forget how awesome they used to be

Scorpions - Arizona

This one's for you, Whit.

I'm required by blog law to tag three people for this meme, so I call upon Sarah, Arwen, and P-Man (all of whom I am confident will give us great lists).  I know Mr. Big Dubya will be disappointed he wasn't tagged, but he's free to do this voluntarily (I grant thee permission, big guy)

CroutonBoy's 2006 Mix Tape

One of my favorite parts of this time of year is the way everybody from the New York Times to Cat Fancy Magazine publishes their "year in review" or "top ten" lists.  It's a great way to catch up on stuff you missed, as well as to see how pretentious the reviewers are (hint: you can tell by whether Joanna Newsom makes their list.)

Unless you missed this summer's greatest album death-march you already know that I'm a little obsessed with music.  This year, however, thanks to the tingly magic illegal piracy of music downloading and the shuffle feature on my iPod I'm declaring the album an officially dead medium.  I can't even remember the last time I listened to one from beginning to end, and the effort of rising off the couch to change a CD?  No thanks...I've got to save that energy to scratch myself.

So how do you have a year-in-music blog without listing the best albums?  Well, first you call James Hetfield and Lars Ulrich, laugh and jeer into the receiver, then hang up.  Then you lament that music just isn't as good as it used to be, and complain that the best album of the year didn't even contain music from this decade.  Then you do what Rob Gordon would do:  you make a mix-tape.

So here's my mix-tape for the end of the year, with 20 songs that I was digging these last twelve months in no particular order.

The CroutonBoy 2006 Year-End Awards are coming up soon.  In the mean time, have a happy (and safe) New Year!

Rockin' the Suburbs, Just Like Jon Bon Jovi Did

See if you can match the following phrases, uttered by Oodgie, to the band she is listening to when she says them:

1)  I HATE these guys a)  Rage Against the Machine
2)  I can't listen to them anymore...you'll make fun of me b)  The Flaming Lips
3)  BAD SONG!  BAD SONG! c)  Ben Folds
4)  I'm turning this off d)  Beastie Boys
5)  Ooooh!  Fun! e)  Dave Matthews Band

The correct answers are:  1-D, 2-E, 3-A, 4-B, 5-C

As you can see, we don't have a lot of common ground when it comes to music.  Not that she has bad taste or anything (except for Sade)...it's just that she's just not into music like I am.  So when we discover someone we both like, it's cause for celebration and revelry.

Benfolds We're always looking for something fun to do with just the two of us, but we always seem to do the same thing, over and over again.  I've suggested sporting and cultural events, but nothing really sticks.  Inevitably, I fall back on concerts, but the last time I dragged Oodgie to a concert she was morbidly pregnant, standing the whole time, while Gary Louris and Mark Olson went through a set-list notable for it's absence of good Jayhawks tunes.  Since then she's been gun-shy about seeing shows with me.

With this in mind, I've managed to score two tickets to Ben Folds at the Beacon Theater tonight.  Seventh row orchestra, reserved seats.   The babysitter is lined up, the plans are set, and for once we're not seeing some crappy movie.

WOO HOO!

A great way to kick off the week, eh?  Now if I can only get her to like Wolfmother....

I'll Beat Plaque So Bad It'll Need a Shoehorn to Put its Hat On.

Why is DaddyTypes the alpha and omega of daddy blogs?  Why does Greg deserve your undying patronage?  Because without him I would not know about such cultural gems as this:

Ali_tooth_decay_cover_1

This could be greatest album in the history of the universe.  You can actually listen to samples of it here.  I haven't done so because it would spoil the perfection of the idea of it for me.

I Wasn't Going to Post Anything Today

I really wasn't.

But this has been burning a hole in my YouTube favorites list for two weeks, and I couldn't keep it to myself any longer.

See, this is what happens with too much outsourcing...
